What is it?

Livingstone is the historic gateway city to Victoria Falls, named after the Scottish missionary-explorer David Livingstone who became the first European to set eyes on the falls in 1855. Just 10 kilometres from the world's largest sheet of falling water, the town hums with a peculiar energy: the low roar of Mosi-oa-Tunya, 'the Smoke that Thunders', drifts in on the breeze while backpackers, safari guides and bungee jumpers swap stories over cold Mosi lagers. Its wide streets are lined with faded Edwardian colonial buildings, tin-roofed shopfronts, craft stalls piled with soapstone hippos and Tonga baskets, and the excellent Livingstone Museum housing Livingstone's own letters and maps. Beyond the town, the Zambezi glides wide and glassy above the gorge before plunging 108 metres, and the surrounding bush hosts elephants, giraffe and white rhino in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Unlike its Zimbabwean twin across the border, Livingstone feels lived-in and local — a real Zambian city rather than a resort — where sunset river cruises, village visits and adrenaline sports coexist within a few kilometres of each other.

Where is it?

Livingstone lies in Zambia's Southern Province, on the northern bank of the Zambezi River at the border with Zimbabwe, served by Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport with flights from Lusaka, Johannesburg and Nairobi. Base yourself in town, along the riverfront near the Royal Livingstone and Zambezi Sun, or at a bush lodge in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. Visit February to May for the falls at their most colossal, or August to November for low water, when you can swim in Devil's Pool, see the gorge's basalt architecture and enjoy prime game viewing.

What makes it worth it?

Few places compress so much wonder into so small a radius. You can wake to the mist of Victoria Falls, walk the Knife-Edge Bridge until you're drenched in spray and rainbows, ride a microlight above the gorge, then watch the sun sink into the Zambezi with a gin in hand as hippos grunt in the shallows. Visitors consistently describe standing at the edge of Devil's Pool as the most terrifying and euphoric moment of their lives, and the falls themselves as 'humbling in a way photographs simply cannot prepare you for'. There's also warmth here: Zambia's reputation as one of Africa's friendliest countries is earned in Livingstone's markets and villages, where conversations with strangers become the trip's quiet highlight. Years later, it's the sound you'll remember — that endless, elemental thunder you feel in your chest before you ever see the water.

How accessible is it?

Livingstone is one of Africa's easiest adventure destinations to arrange: taxis and shuttles cost a few dollars, the falls entrance fee is around US$20–25 for international visitors, and everything from rafting to helicopter flights can be booked on arrival or through your lodge. Accommodation ranges from US$15 hostel dorms to US$600+ per night luxury riverfront lodges, with solid mid-range options at US$60–150. Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival (roughly US$50, or a US$50 KAZA UniVisa covering both Zambia and Zimbabwe); check current requirements before travel. Walking the falls trails requires only basic fitness and a raincoat — hire a poncho at the gate in high water — while activities like white-water rafting the Batoka Gorge (grade V, roughly US$150) and the 111-metre bungee jump demand nerve more than training. Budget travellers can enjoy Livingstone on US$50–70 a day, and malaria prophylaxis plus routine vaccinations are recommended.
