What is it?

Chicago is America's great architectural city — the birthplace of the skyscraper, rebuilt from the ashes of the Great Fire of 1871 into a laboratory of steel, glass and ambition. Walk the Loop and you'll crane your neck at Art Deco towers, Mies van der Rohe glass boxes and Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie School homes, all reflected in the Chicago River as architecture tour boats glide beneath the bascule bridges. Beyond the skyline it's a city of neighbourhoods: Pilsen's Mexican murals, Bronzeville's jazz legacy, Andersonville's Swedish roots, Chinatown's dim sum parlours. The food is legendary and unpretentious — deep-dish pizza pulled molten from the pan, Italian beef sandwiches dipped in gravy, Chicago-style hot dogs with a garden of toppings and absolutely no ketchup. And the soundtrack is pure Americana: electric blues born on the South Side, house music invented in a warehouse, comedy improvised at Second City, and 40,000 fans singing in the bleachers at Wrigley Field.

Where is it?

Chicago sits on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois, in the American Midwest, served by O'Hare and Midway airports and by Amtrak trains from across the country. The essentials cluster downtown — Millennium Park and 'The Bean', the Art Institute, the Riverwalk, Navy Pier, the Willis Tower Skydeck and the Museum Campus — while the real character lives in neighbourhoods a short 'L' ride away. Late spring through early autumn (May–October) is glorious, with lakefront beaches, rooftop bars and festivals like Lollapalooza and the Air & Water Show; winters are famously brutal but bring cosy blues bars, world-class museums and Christkindlmarket.

What makes it worth it?

Visitors arrive expecting a stopover and leave planning their return — Chicago has a way of surprising people who thought they knew American cities. It has the cultural firepower of a coastal metropolis without the attitude: a world-top-five art museum, a symphony orchestra of global renown, Michelin-starred kitchens and dive bars where strangers buy you a round. Stand at the prow of an architecture cruise as the canyon of towers opens up around you, or watch the sun set over the lake from the 18-mile Lakefront Trail, and the phrase people always reach for is 'I had no idea it was this beautiful.' Years later you'll remember the smell of a deep-dish coming out of the oven, a guitar solo in a smoky Kingston Mines back room, and the moment the skyline lit up as you crossed the Michigan Avenue Bridge at dusk. It's the most quintessentially American big city there is — hard-working, generous, endlessly proud of itself, and right.

How accessible is it?

Chicago is one of the easiest major destinations in the world to arrange — roughly 50 million visitors come each year, no advance planning required beyond a flight and a hotel. The 'L' train and buses cover the city cheaply (a day pass is around $5, and the Blue Line runs from O'Hare to downtown for a few dollars), and the flat, walkable Loop and lakefront make getting around simple for most fitness levels. Budget travellers can do it on $100–150 a day with hostels and street food; mid-range visitors should expect $250–400 a day including a central hotel, museums and dinners out, while luxury stays on the Magnificent Mile climb well beyond that. Book the Chicago Architecture Center river cruise, Skydeck timed entry and popular restaurants in advance during summer; a Chicago CityPASS or Go City pass saves significantly if you plan to hit several museums. The only real barrier is weather — January and February regularly drop below freezing with fierce lake winds, so pack seriously or visit between May and October.
