What is it?

San Juan del Sur is a crescent-shaped fishing bay on Nicaragua's Pacific coast that has grown into the country's most beloved beach town without ever quite losing its salt-crusted, small-port soul. Brightly painted clapboard houses and hostel balconies climb the hillsides above a bay where pangas bob beside charter boats, and a towering white Cristo de la Misericordia statue watches over it all from the northern headland. Days here run on a simple rhythm: an early shuttle to an empty surf break, ceviche and cold Toña at a beachfront table, hammock time, then the whole town drifting to the shore to watch one of Central America's most reliably spectacular sunsets. By night, the malecón hums with reggaeton, fire dancers and travellers swapping wave reports, and on Sundays the infamous beach parties draw a crowd from across the isthmus. Unlike the polished resort strips elsewhere in Central America, San Juan del Sur remains scruffy, cheap and genuinely Nicaraguan — a place where surf bums, backpackers, expats and fishing families share the same stretch of sand.

Where is it?

The town sits in Rivas department in southwest Nicaragua, roughly 140 km from Managua and just 30 km north of the Costa Rican border at Peñas Blancas, making it an easy stop on any Central American overland route. The best surf is not in the bay itself but at nearby beaches reached by shuttle or 4x4 — Playa Maderas and Playa Marsella to the north, Playa Hermosa, Playa Yankee and Playa Remanso to the south. The dry season from December to April brings sunshine and offshore winds, while May to October delivers bigger swells, greener hills and fewer crowds; the Christmas and Semana Santa weeks are the liveliest and most expensive.

What makes it worth it?

There is a particular kind of freedom that San Juan del Sur hands out for almost nothing: a surfboard, a mile of empty beach, a two-dollar plate of grilled fish and an entire afternoon with nowhere to be. Travellers who plan two nights routinely stay two weeks — the town has a reputation for quietly dissolving itineraries. Climbing the 300-odd steps to the Cristo statue at golden hour, with the bay glowing below and pelicans skimming the water, is the image most people carry home. "I learned to surf here and never wanted to leave" is close to a cliché among visitors, and so is the memory of a bonfire on Maderas with strangers who became friends by the second beer. Years later it's not the parties you'll recall so much as the sheer, cheap, sun-warmed ease of it all — and the moment the Pacific turned molten orange for the hundredth night in a row.

How accessible is it?

San Juan del Sur is one of the easiest destinations in Nicaragua to reach: shuttles and chicken buses run daily from Granada, Managua, León and the Costa Rican border, with private transfers from Managua airport costing around US$70–120 and shared shuttles US$20–35. It is exceptionally affordable — hostel dorms from US$8–15, comfortable hotels US$40–90, beachfront meals US$5–12, and surf lessons roughly US$25–40 including board and transport. No special fitness is needed to enjoy the town, though surfing and the steep Cristo staircase reward reasonable mobility; the walk up takes 20–30 minutes in heat, so go early or late with water. Most nationalities receive a 90-day tourist card on arrival for US$10–13; the currency is the córdoba, but US dollars circulate freely. Book ahead over Christmas, New Year and Semana Santa, take normal precautions with valuables on the beach and at night, and check for rip currents before swimming at the wilder outer beaches.
