What is it?

Geneva is Switzerland's most cosmopolitan city, a compact, French-speaking metropolis wrapped around the western tip of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) with Mont Blanc glinting on the horizon on clear days. Its signature sight is the Jet d'Eau, a 140-metre plume of water that roars into the sky and drenches anyone brave enough to walk the pier beneath it. Beyond the waterfront, cobbled lanes climb to the Old Town, where St. Pierre Cathedral — the pulpit from which John Calvin preached the Reformation — offers tower views over terracotta rooftops, and antique shops and cafés spill onto Place du Bourg-de-Four, the city's oldest square. Geneva is also the world's diplomatic capital: the Palais des Nations flies the flags of nearly 200 nations, the Red Cross was born here, and beneath the countryside CERN's Large Hadron Collider smashes particles to unlock the origins of the universe. The mood is refined but relaxed — think lakeside swims in summer, fondue and Genevan longeole sausage in winter, and watch boutiques whose window displays cost more than a car.

Where is it?

Geneva sits in the far southwest of Switzerland, almost entirely surrounded by France, at the point where the Rhône flows out of Lake Geneva between the Jura mountains and the Alps. Key spots include the Old Town, the Jet d'Eau and Bains des Pâquis on the lakefront, the international quarter with the UN and Red Cross Museum, and day trips to Chamonix, Annecy or the Lavaux vineyards. Summer (June–September) is best for lake swimming, boat cruises and the Fêtes de Genève, while December brings the atmospheric Escalade festival and Christmas markets.

What makes it worth it?

Few cities pack so much meaning into so small a space: in a single day you can stand where the Reformation was preached, where the Geneva Conventions were signed, and where scientists are probing the birth of the cosmos. Visitors often describe an unexpected emotional jolt at the Red Cross Museum or the Broken Chair sculpture facing the UN — reminders that ideas conceived here have saved millions of lives. Then you step outside, buy a cone of Swiss chocolate, and watch the sun sink behind the Jura while the Jet d'Eau catches the last golden light. "I came for a conference and left wanting to move here," is a common refrain, as is the surprise at how swimmable and beautiful the lake is in August. Years later, what people remember most is the contrast: world-changing seriousness on one hand, and the simple pleasure of a lakeside coffee with the Alps on the skyline on the other.

How accessible is it?

Geneva is one of Europe's easiest cities to reach — its airport handles around 15–17 million passengers a year, sits just 7 minutes by train from the centre, and hands arriving visitors a free 80-minute public transport ticket. Hotels also provide the Geneva Transport Card, giving free trams, buses and boats for the length of your stay, and the city is flat and walkable with excellent accessibility for wheelchair users. The catch is cost: Geneva is consistently ranked among the world's most expensive cities, with budget travellers spending CHF 150–200 per day, mid-range CHF 250–400, and fine dining or luxury hotels pushing far higher. Save money with free museum days (first Sunday of the month at many city museums), the free Bains des Pâquis lakeside baths (a few francs entry), and free CERN and UN visits that must be booked online well in advance — CERN tours in particular fill up weeks ahead. No special fitness or gear is needed; two to three days is enough for the city itself, more if you're using it as a base for the Alps.
